Musical Movie Recommendations

Give seeing your music a try

Ok, we get it, you've been spending a lot of time at home these days. But! Were you spending it right? Did you reach the point where you are just watching the same movies/series over and over? Well, we'd like to switch it up a bit for you and sprinkle some musical movies into your life.

When we say musical movies, do we mean musicals? No, but this list does include some musicals so bear with us if that's not your cup of tea.

tip

The first movie we'd like to recommend is "Guava Island". Donald Glover and Rihanna both star in the short film but Donald Glover (aka Childish Gambino) supplies the majority of musical influence to the movie. Theres a mix of both North American sound and Caribbean vibes all throughout the movie. Guava Island is technically a musical but it shys away from the classic "show tunes" style of music and delivers the songs featured in the film in a very thoughtful way! This movie is a strong recommend if you like good cinematography and colourful music.

If you're feeling nostalgic, circa 1966 classic, our second mention on this list will be right up your alley. "The Sound of Music" is a classic go to for anyone fancying to hear "So long Farewell" being sung in Austria. Now this is a classic example of your run of the mill musical but it owns it all while telling a love story.

What's that? You absolutely hate musicals but still like music? There's something for you too! You need to take a gander at “Whiplash”. Whiplash is a 2014 American drama film written and directed by Damien Chazelle. Basically, the protagonist wants to become a jazz drummer and his teacher puts them through INTENSE and questionable training. It's filled with music, drama and story, and it isn't a musical. Perfect for anyone that doesn't want to see people burst into song and dance after they say “Good Morning”.

What's your favourite musical movie? Anything on our list? Was it the modern version of Cats? Let us know what you've been busy watching!
