Working at a Jaz in the City almost automatically means that you are into music. And being into music and living in the Netherlands almost automatically means you want to go to Lowlands Festival. Lowlands is one of the biggest music festivals of the Netherlands that is being held in August each year. Almost 55.000 music aficionados gather for three days filled with music, theater, comedy and what not. This year a delegation of 4 Jaz Band Members were part of those 55.000 people and we thought it would be selfish not to share the experiences of them with you, as we are sure that many of you are music lovers as well.
Lowlands - The festival
Lowlands officially is a 3-day festival, but for many people the fun starts on Thursday and will not end untill Monday morning. Jaz in the City Band Member Lisa was the first to travel to the camping site of Lowlands to ensure the perfect spot. The rest of the crew arrived on a truly sunny Friday. Once all complete the festival could start.
On the agenda were golden oldies as Noel Gallagher, LCD Sound system and Paul Kalkbrenner but also the new cool was well represented with artists like Disclosure, Anderson.Paak and The Internet. As all of the Jaz team had their own favorites, the first hour was well spend in the sun making a plan for the rest of the weekend. From Tom Odell to Jake Bugg and from Edward Sharpe & the magnetic zeros to a big ending by Muse. Lowlands has it all.
The vibe on Lowlands is like no other. Everyone feels like a hippie for a weekend and is just lying in the sun enjoying the great music, good food and lovely people. Saving some energy isn’t a bad idea as the last show ends at 04:30 in the morning. The festival is evolving from simply just bands to more and more great DJ’s and we can tell you that these parties are worth the wait.
As cool as the whole weekend was, of course there are always some favorites. So hereby is the very best of Lowlands 2016 in the opinion of the Jaz band members:
Lisa: Of course Lowlands is about discovering new bands and I did that this weekend. Still my favo moment was Muse on Friday. The way they gave a show and played with the audience gave me goosebumps all over. They never disappoint (the same as Lowlands. This was my 11th edition!).
Maria: Me, being into kind of loud music, Wolfmother was the best act of the weekend. These survivors of rock are still capable to bring one massive rock and roll party.
Seger: Tiggs Da Author!!! Go listen to Tiggs Da Author. This from origin Nigerian now lives in South-London. Always a smile on his face and every song will make you dance, clap or sing along. This was my final act on the Sunday and it was amazing. But maybe the best thing of Lowlands wasn’t an act, but it was the audience. Everybody seemed to be friends and shared their love for the music and the festival #onelove.
Zoe: Hardrock is fun and all, but the true musicians for me are the ones that get a huge tent filled with audience quit. Just by playing their magical tunes. RY X and Jamie Woon for example. Next to the great bands Lowlands doesn’t end at 23:00 for me. The DJ’s in the evening made on hell of a party with as a highlight The Black Madonna.
